Doctor of Philosophy - Arab and Islamic Studies [048381G]

The ANU Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (The Middle East and Central Asia) is the first of its kind in Australia. It focuses on Iran, Central Asia and particularly the Arab world. The Centre integrates the study of Middle Eastern and Central Asian contemporary politics, history, culture, political economy, economics and the religion of Islam within the broader framework of the changing global order. The Centre fosters the study of the region's most relevant languages of Arabic, Persian and Turkish. It also focuses on issues pertinent to Australia's interests in, and the development of, its commercial, scientific and industrial ties with the Middle East and Central Asia.

The PhD and MPhil in the Centre are for students who are passionate about a specialised component of these regions, are seeking a specialist career in academia, in multilateral organisations, or consulting firms. Supervision can be provided for a wide range of topics including Middle Eastern and Central Asian politics, history, political economy, Persian, Turkish, Arabic, literature, culture and Islamic studies.

To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy program you will be required to have completed at least an Australian Honours degree or equivalent with a result of H2A Second Class Honours Division A Equivalence may be met by completion of a Masters degree that includes a significant research component.
