BSc (Hons) Physics and Astronomy (with a foundation year)

In the Department of Physics and Astronomy, youll be taught by the experts who are driving our research programmes. Youll have full access to our facilities and equipment.

Once youve successfully completed your Foundation Year, you can choose from degrees in whichever branch of physics interests you the most from astrophysics to theoretical physics. If youre a high-achiever in your Foundation Year, you also have the option of joining one of our integrated Masters courses (MPhys).

Not everyone has the same support to get to higher education we help you reach your potential. When we receive applications through UCAS, we consider all factors and will sometimes make contextual offers as part of our Access and Participation Plan

Subjects
A-levels should normally include both Mathematics and Physics, with at least grade C in Mathematics.

Applications from A-level students without Mathematics and/or Physics will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

GCSEs
In addition, you will need evidence of a broad range of GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above (or grade C).

Extended Project Qualification
We take the EPQ into account when considering your application and it can be useful in the summer when your results are released if you have narrowly missed the conditions of your offer. We do not routinely include the EPQ in the conditions of your offer but we sometimes offer alternative conditions that include the EPQ.

International Baccalaureate

27 points overall from the full IB Diploma.

Subjects
Higher Level subjects should normally include both Mathematics and Physics, with at least 4 in each.

Applications from students without Higher Mathematics and/or Physics will be considered on a individual basis. We will be looking for evidence of competence in mathematics (and would expect at least a 5 in Standard Level if not taken to Higher level).

Additional requirements
You may be asked to come to an interview and/or a mathematics assessment during an Applicant Visit Day as part of the selection process.

IELTS (Academic)
6.0 overall, including at least 5.5 in each component

TOEFL (iBT)
80 overall, including at least 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking, 17 in Writing
