Study Programmes for DSE Students

  1. Form 5 / Form 6 ➨ Foundation Program ➨ Year 1 of University

    • Students complete a 1-year foundation program (covering most subjects) followed by a 3-year university course. This 4-year route helps students achieve the grades required (usually 50%–75%) to progress to Year 1 of university.

  2. DSE (Form 6 Graduate) ➨ International Year 1 ➨ Year 2 of University

    • Completing a 1-year International Year 1 program allows students to progress to Year 2 of university if they meet the necessary standards, finishing their degree in 3 years. Ideal for students with HKDSE scores at levels 3-4 and proficient in English, this route includes subjects like business, engineering, media, psychology, architecture, law, international relations, and biology.

  3. DSE (Form 6 Graduate) ➨ 1-Year A-Level Program ➨ Year 1 of University

    • Students can complete a 1-year A-Level programme and apply to UK universities through UCAS to obtain a degree in 4 years. Alternatively, they can use Non-JUPAS to apply to universities in Hong Kong after the A-Level course. This route is suited for students whose HKDSE results were below expectations.

  4. DSE (Form 6 Graduate) ➨ Direct Entry to Year 1 of UK University

    • Students can apply directly to UK universities via UCAS, earning a degree after 3 years. This option is best for students with strong HKDSE results.

What if DSE Results Are Unsatisfactory or Retaking Exams Isn't an Option?

Students with unsatisfactory DSE results or those not planning to take public exams are best suited for university foundation programmes. These programmes use course grades for university admission, allowing students to progress to Year 1 without additional exams. This is a practical and appealing option.

Considerations in Foundation Programme

Many universities offer foundation programs, but what should be considered when choosing one?

Is there a difference between foundation programs co-hosted by educational groups and those run by the universities themselves?

  1. Guaranteed Progression

    1. If students complete a foundation program and meet the university’s requirements, they are guaranteed progression to Year 1 of the same university.

    2. A few foundation programs do not guarantee direct entry to the same university after completion, especially for prestigious universities.

    3. Check the university’s website or prospectus to see if it clearly states the required grades and progression conditions. If guaranteed progression is provided, it ensures that students can continue to Year 1 of the same university.

  2. One-to-One Foundation

    1. Students must apply through the educational institution that co-hosts the foundation programme with the university.

    2. Students can use university facilities, student ID, and participate in activities, just like regular university students.

In Hong Kong, there are five major education institutions collaborating with various universities to offer foundation programs, including six large international education groups: CEG, INTO, Kaplan, Navitas, Oxford International (OIEG), and Study Group. (For more details: UK Foundation Programmes)
