Please note that 15 October was the deadline for applications for any course at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, or for most courses in medicine, veterinary medicine/science, and dentistry. Applications for all other UCAS Undergraduate courses should arrive at UCAS by 25 January.

You can improve your chances of getting selected for your dream course by doing these five things to help you stand out from the crowd.

5 Ways To Boost Your UCAS Application

1. Write A Good Personal Statement

While you might not be able to control your grades now, one thing that you can put more effort into is your personal statement.

A strong personal statement will help to define you as an individual and highlight your motivations as well as your future plans for pursuing this field of study or discipline.

It is important that you try to:

  • Mention your career aspirations in as much detail as possible - Highlight the impact you would like to make as a consequence of getting a degree

  • Talk about your journey and the struggles that you faced at this point

  • Also, mention your side hustles or extra-curricular activities

  • Why you want to be an international student and study in the UK

Essentially, you want to ensure you are able to stand out from the cookie-cutter applications which all normally focus on the education history aspect.

Be sure to include key details such as: - Any leadership position in a club or society - Any part-time jobs or even side-businesses you made - Any charitable events you have organized or participated in.

If you are feeling stuck, you can also consult our friendly IDP counsellors who can help provide advice and workshops to help you polish your personal statement to perfection!

2. Complete All Mandatory Questions And Not Skip Any Sections

The application for UCAS can be a very long process and the last thing you want to do is to rush to fill things in at the last minute.

Thankfully, you can start filling out sections that you are confident in first and then taking some time to handle the rest.

Remember, there are a lot of mandatory details and questions you will need to fill out, including:

  • Your residency status

  • Your national identity and occupational background

  • Your personal circumstances (that even includes your parental education)

  • Your plans to fund your studies

You must provide accurate and articulate answers in your writing.

Not only will the content of your answers be important, but it is also likely that the way you present them will be important and help your application as well.

If you encounter any difficulty, our IDP counsellors can help assist you to fill out the application form and manage your UCAS account.

3. Be Clear About Your Qualifications And Education History

Perhaps the most important section of your application is your qualifications and education history. This means consolidating all of your education results, especially from your junior college or pre-tertiary education institute. You will want to include your grades and results, all of which will help the university better understand your qualifications and better gauge if you are a good fit.

Be sure to also include any other certificates or part-time courses you are learning that are relevant to the course you are applying for as well. It can just be proof of enrolment. For example, if you are pursuing a degree in computer science, having enrolled in a course about data analytics is a plus and shows commitment.

Plus, if you are taking or have taken an English language test like the IELTS, you want to add in the details such as your IELTS test report form number. This will definitely help give you an edge during consideration.

4. Get A Good Reference/Written Recommendation

One great way to enhance your application is to obtain a recommendation letter that will help showcase your character, personality, and academic dedication to the university.

This is mandatory and is best obtained from either an adviser, a teacher, or a professional (in your job or internship).

Even if you get permission from your chosen university to skip this, we highly recommend getting this done as it will shine you in the best light possible and is a testament to your character and willingness to go the extra mile.

5. Submit Your Application Before The Deadline

Once you are done, it is essential that you double-check through it and send it as soon as possible!

This is doubly important especially if you missed the first deadline and now your application is no longer entitled to equal consideration.

While the final deadline technically will be 30th June before it heads to clearing, you want to get this done early, because you have more choices to choose from!

6. What To Do If You Can’t Get Any Offers

If you are unable to get any offers, you can seek tailored advice from our IDP counsellors who can provide customised solutions for you.

This will include UCAS extra, pathway programs, UCAS clearing as well as direct consultation with school representatives during events such as university fairs.

All this can help you gain entry to a university course instead of needing to wait for the following year to apply again. >
