The Step-By-Step Guide To Studying In Canada For Hong Kong Students

1. Research Your Dream University & Desired Course

Before anything, it is important to do some research and choose a university and course that you’re interested in pursuing.

After all, you’ll be committing at least three years to your chosen area of study. Also, as the official language can vary from region to region, it helps to find out more about the region you’re planning to go to. For example, English is Ontario’s official language but in Quebec, the official language is French.

As this could affect the teaching language of your university, it helps to be aware so that you make a good choice. If you aren’t sure where to begin, start exploring your options via IDP Education.

2. Shortlist Your Course & Check Your Eligibility

With a wide diversity of courses available across Canada’s universities, it might take some time to narrow your options down so that you can pick a suitable program.

After which, you’ll have to look into the specific details of the course requirements to see if you qualify.

As an international student, there might be some basic requirements you have to fulfil – depending on your program of choice. These include language proficiency and in some cases, proof of high grades, if you’re looking to increase your chances in getting into a good university.

3. Take Your IELTS Language Test

As language proficiency is a mandatory requirement for all students, you’ll be required to provide proof of your language skills via a proficiency test such as the IELTS Language Test.

Before you even start your application, you should clear your IELTS in your home country.

For your test, expect to be assessed across different language components including speaking, listening, reading and writing.

4. Check For Any Potential Scholarships To Apply For

Almost every university in Canada offers some kind of financial aid for students. Hence, it is a good idea to take a look at your options while you’re doing your research and shortlisting universities.

One of the most common scholarships offered across many universities is the entrance scholarship, which offsets the cost of tuition fees either in full or partially.

However, do note that these scholarships are largely based on academic merit – so you may be required to meet a minimum GPA or grades in order to qualify.

Some other scholarships you can look into include needs-based scholarships, which are awarded to international students in need of financial support and country-based scholarships, which are available only to selected countries.

In the event you’re from a qualifying country, you can see what’s available and apply for a suitable option.

5. Apply For Your Course & Await Acceptance

As each university handles its own applications, you should get familiar with the application portal and also take note of required documents, deadlines and other important details of your application.

For example, the application deadline for September’s intake would fall anywhere around the end of February to early March. However, scholarships would be early deadlines so it helps to Wapply ahead of time if you’d like to do so.

Also, application deadlines could vary depending on some factors such as the university, programme of study and province in Canada.

6. Apply For Your Student Visa

You’ll be required to obtain a student visa (or study permit) in order to successfully take your spot at a Canadian university.

To qualify for a Canadian study permit, you’ll be required to provide evidence of a valid passport, proof that you can support yourself during your study period in Canada as well as an acceptance letter from a university on the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) list.

Study permits only cover the length of your study program and an additional 90 days after the program end date. This is to provide an allowance for those who wish to extend their stay after graduation or prepare to leave Canada.

Do note that at IDP, we only provide Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) guidelines and will not be doing the visa application for you.

7. Arrange Your Accommodations & Flight Details

You’ll have to do proper planning especially when it comes to preparing for a longer trip overseas. Hence, it would be best to do it ahead of time.

On top of booking your flights and accommodation, you should also explore the different types of transport options and read up on the country’s latest COVID-19 regulations to ensure safe and easy day-to-day living.

Also, by taking the time to familiarise yourself with on-campus life in your university as well as off-campus life within the region, you’ll have a smoother transition as an international student.
