The Student generally unable to meet the minimum entry requirements of mainstream overseas Universities. Students should apply for university foundation courses or diploma courses as a back-up plan, most foundation or diploma courses last for six months to two years; students can enter desired undergraduate courses upon meeting the internal requirements of the foundation / diploma courses. Students can enroll in business, law, engineering, health sciences and other professional disciplines in an Australian foundation or diploma institution, while a number of UK institutions are offering foundation programmes in commerce or arts disciplines which lead to an undergraduate course.

Students can try to apply most disciplines from most high ranked overseas universities, such as business, law, accounting, architecture and health sciences courses. Students can try to apply most UK universities within 30th rankings, or must Australian Group of Eight (Go8) universities. Universities may require students to achieve other admission requirements such as entrance test.

If a student is going to apply for actuarial studies, medicine, veterinary science dentistry from an overseas university, the student should achieve all subjects in DSE with Level 5 or above. Universities may require students to achieve other admission requirements such as entrance test.

In addition to the academic requirements, most overseas institutions also require the students to achieve certain English proficiency. Most overseas universities require the students to have Level 4 or above in English Language at HKDSE. If a student cannot meet this requirement, they can attain IELTS as the alternative for HKDSE English Language. Most overseas universities require students to achieve IELTS 6.0 - 6.5 points score, individual disciplines such as nursing or law require students to achieve IELTS 7.0 points or above. The minimum IELTS requirement for foundation courses or diploma courses is from 5.5 points.
