Protect yourself and your family with insurance

You need to think about insurance cover to help protect you, your health, your home and your belongings.

Health insurance

You will need health insurance while you are studying in New Zealand. Your health insurance should cover all dental, medical, specialist and hospital fees. Your health insurance policy will be checked by your educational institution to ensure it meets all the necessary requirements.

Home and contents insurance

Home and contents insurance covers the building you live in and also your belongings, this includes your furniture, clothes and appliances. If you’re renting private accommodation, you don’t need to worry about building insurance as this is the responsibility of the owner, but you do need to consider contents insurance especially if you have valuable items you would find difficult to replace if lost or stolen. Your insurance policy will have a set limit of how much you can claim if something happens, so you need to check if the limits are adequate.

Travel and health insurance

You need to make sure you are covered in terms of travel and health insurance from the day you leave your home country until the day you arrive back home. The policy you choose needs to meet the very specific and strict standards set out in the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.
