Types of master’s degree in the UK

You can usually find taught master’s and research master’s program in the UK. Taught master’s program is generally similar to a bachelor’s degree, and it usually last for 12 months. Students are to attend lectures with a fixed working hour and seminar schedule. Students will be assessed by either individual or group projects, essays, or exams at the end of the course.

Research master's program, on the other hand, is more research-based and takes about one to three years to complete. Instead of attending classes and exams regularly, students are required to meet with professors on a regular basis (contact hours), and submit papers (longer length) when they graduate. After completing a research master's degree, students could choose to further their study and apply for a PhD.
