The Russell Group comprises 24 of the UK’s leading higher education institutions offering excellence in teaching and research. They are at the top of the UK rankings, as well as some global league tables.
The Group was officially established in 2007 and named after the Hotel Russell in London, where the heads of 17 leading research intensive universities began to meet in 1994.
The aim of the organisation is to help ensure that the universities have the optimum conditions in which to flourish and continue to make social, economic and cultural impacts through their world-leading research and teaching.

The N8 Research Partnership was founded in 2007 and it is a collaboration of eight research-intensive universities in Northern England - Durham, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, and York. The N8 Research Partnership develops cross-sectoral research collaborations and programmes that position them as ‘go-to’ places in key innovation sectors of economic impact.
