Finding accommodation when studying abroad: Australia Edition

Accommodation while studying abroad is a significant factor for all international students. Studying abroad is not just about gaining knowledge in a foreign land; it's also about living independently away from family. This can be another opportunity for us to learn and gain experience by being away from the familiar. However, finding accommodation in Australia is not as difficult and complicated as one might think for Thai people to manage. The rental options are diverse. Generally, there are four types of accommodations for students like us: an apartment or condo, a rental house, or off-campus housing.

IDP has information on all four accommodation options for you to consider:

1. Off-campus Housing

This is another option for those who want real independence.

Features of the accommodation

1. Furnished: Most come with furniture ready for move-in.
2. Partially furnished or unfurnished
3. These are rooms that are partially decorated or empty, and you have to buy your own furniture.

Price:

AUD 150–600 per week

Advantages:

Independence and not having to share a bathroom or home appliances with many people If it's a house or condo with more than one bedroom, you can rent it out and manage income from sharing the rent. The cost of the accommodation is cheaper than other options.

Disadvantages:

You have to manage everything in the house yourself, and you won't have the chance to meet people as often.

2. Student Dormitories in Australia

In the university area, there will be a zone for student dormitories.

Features of the accommodation:

1. Ready-to-move-in rooms
2. 24-hour service center
3. Internet in the dormitory
4. Located near the university,
5. There are options for both sharing and living alone.

Price:

AUD 250–600 per week

Advantages:

Student dormitories in Australia are a very safe option, as they have 24-hour security.• You get to meet people from the same institution, which is a good way to build connections with peers.

Disadvantages:

The cost is high, and the speed of the internet may be slow when there are many users.

3. On-Campus Dormitories

{asset.title}

These are apartments within the university campus that come with everything needed for life while studying.

Features of the accommodation:

1. Ready-to-move-in rooms (with cleaning service)
2. Internet in the dormitory
3. Offer the food
4. Shared kitchen
5. Shared bathroom

Price:

AUD 250–600 per week

Advantages:

You will get to meet old and new faces from your institution all the time, so you won't have to worry about feeling lonely for sure.• On-campus dormitories also come with a fully equipped study room.• If you don't like cooking for yourself, this is definitely the place for you, as you won't have to worry about being hungry.

Disadvantages:

If you value privacy, this might be a bit difficult due to the shared bathrooms, and you will have to sign a long-term contract for a year.

4. Homestay

{asset.title}

Staying in a homestay is like becoming part of the family of the host, who is ready to welcome students into their home.

Features of the accommodation:

1. Ready-to-move-in rooms;
2. internet;
3. food;
4. Amenities

Price

AUD 250–400 per week

Everything is ready! Internet, food, bed, bathroom, various amenities

Disadvantages

Sometimes, sharing with a homestay can be quite oppressive due to privacy issues, and it may be far from your educational institution.
