When Thai children have to live abroad, they may also experience homesickness. How can we cope with homesickness? We have some good advice to help ease those feelings of longing.

Thai students studying abroad: "Dealing with Homesickness"

I believe many people have questions and concerns about homesickness. Let's get to know homesickness better. Homesickness often occurs in people who are far away from home, friends, or family, and they may experience sadness and anxiety. It's hard to think about anything other than home, even though it may sound worrying, but in reality, this condition is not as scary as you think. We can deal with homesickness easily, and today, IDP has some ways to cope with homesickness to share with you.

Don't push yourself too hard

It's not unusual or shameful to feel homesick, as it can happen to anyone. Putting too much pressure on yourself can worsen the symptoms. It's okay to not feel okay when missing home. It's not a weakness to miss the important people we haven't seen.

Don't stay alone in the room

Our room may make us feel safe, but it's not good to stay alone in the room too much because it can make us feel worse. Separating oneself from society will make us feel homesick more often. Try going out to meet friends and socialise. Engaging in activities can help reduce homesickness. Or maybe try to find a part-time job.

Bring along belongings that represent our home or family with us

Bringing beloved items from home with us can make us feel safe and feel like we are still close to our family. We don't have to feel embarrassed or afraid that others might make fun of us, because sometimes our roommates might also hide their own beloved items. Hugging a teddy bear that we hug every night at home can make us feel more at home.

Hang Out

One reason why we often miss home is because we find ourselves in an unfamiliar place. Exploring the city and going out to see the sights can help us become more familiar with the area more easily and quickly. If we become familiar with the city we are in, it will make us feel more at home. Try going out for a walk on your free day to get to know the place; it may help you feel less lonely.
