How should I prepare to study in Canada?

Topics covered

1. Prepare to cope with Canadian culture.

Before going to study in Canada, there are several things that we should prepare for in order to be able to live there enjoyably, understand the culture, and blend in with it.

The culture of Canada is quite unique. By studying their culture in advance, you can understand it more easily, allowing you to adapt better and know what kind of environment you will encounter. Canada has a student culture quite similar to Thailand, with students valuing and being committed to their educational institutions. Familiarizing yourself with this culture makes it easy to adjust and feel like a part of that institution.

2. Plan your finances well and prepare reserve funds.

Don't forget about expenses beyond tuition, such as textbooks. Prepare money in advance for unexpected expenses and have reserve funds for emergency situations like transportation or health insurance charges by the university. Contact the institution to request a list of expenses you will have to pay when you go to study.

3. Familiarize yourself with the Canadian education system.

In addition to learning about Canadian culture, have a basic understanding of their education system. Knowing how they teach in Canada will allow you to adapt to learning there more quickly and adjust your study plan to better suit the environment.

4. Don't forget to prepare thick winter clothes.

Canada has very cold weather, so preparing winter clothes is a must. Layering is common, allowing you to adjust to different temperatures. Don't forget winter boots as well, especially when leaving the airport.

5. Plan for travel.

Many international students use Reading Week as a time to travel around. Prepare a travel plan for your free time, as Canada offers not only studying but also many natural sights and tourist places to explore. If you are interested in or need advice on studying abroad, feel free to contact the IDP team.
