You’re moving to the UK! Here’s what to expect.

If you're planning to study in the UK, you're in for an exciting adventure! The UK is one of the most iconic countries in the world and its influence can be felt globally. The country is made up of four regions: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. You can travel from the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland, to the Isles of Scilly in southwest England, and across the sea to Northern Ireland, all without leaving the UK.

Around 65 million people live in the UK, with the majority residing in England. The capital, London, is the largest city and a global hub for culture, business, and education. London is an incredibly multicultural and multi-faith city, so you’ll be expected to respect others’ beliefs, just as they’ll respect yours. Although English is the main language spoken, you might also hear Welsh, Gaelic, Scots, and Irish Gaelic depending on the region. However, your English skills will easily get you by in daily life!

Weather in the UK

The weather in the UK might not always match the sunny days you dream of. It can be unpredictable, with a mix of rain and shine throughout the year. Even if the forecast says sunny, it’s always a good idea to carry an umbrella and a warm jacket just in case!

Here’s what to expect each season:

  • Summer (June - August): The best weather of the year with long, sunny days, though occasional thunderstorms are common.

  • Autumn (September - November): Cooler temperatures and a mix of mild, dry days and rainy, windy ones.

  • Winter (December - February): The coldest season, often with freezing temperatures and the occasional snowfall.

  • Spring (March - May): A pleasant mix of sunshine and unexpected showers.

Also, remember that on the last Sunday of March, you’ll need to "spring forward" one hour for daylight saving time!

Politics and Government

People often think the UK is ruled by the Queen, but the royal family has a mostly ceremonial role. The UK is a parliamentary democracy, with the government elected by the people through general elections (held every five years). The government is led by the Prime Minister, supported by a Cabinet of senior ministers. Parliament, which consists of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, passes laws, debates issues, and sets taxes. Local governments manage public services and decisions at the community level. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own governments that handle domestic issues like health and education.

Lifestyle and Traditions

The UK is famous for its multicultural society, especially in London, where people from all around the world live and work. British society values politeness, and it’s common to hear "please" and "thank you" in everyday conversations. Punctuality is important, so be sure to be on time!

The UK also has a thriving cultural scene with world-class museums, art galleries, music, and theatre. Sports, especially football (soccer), rugby, and tennis, are a big part of the national identity. You’ll also notice that British people love their pubs, which are not just places to drink but social hubs where people gather after work to chat and relax.
