Study Abroad | Your Personal Guide To Applying For Canada Study Permit

Before you can head to Canada to study, you’ll have to apply for a study permit first. This will come after you have already applied for and have been accepted to your university and learning program.  However, you will also need to meet a few more criteria before you are eligible to apply.

Firstly, you will need to prove that you are a fully vaccinated traveller and that you are enrolled at a designated learning institution. This is essential so you’d want to check if your dream university is part of this list before you even apply for your course.

Additionally, you will have to provide that you can provide for yourself during your entire stay in Canada. This will mean proving you have sufficient funds for your university tuition fees, living expenses for yourself or anyone else you are bringing along and return flights back to your home country once your program is finished.

If these aren’t met, your application might be delayed or completely rejected.

Now that you know the requirements, here are the documents required to apply for a study permit.

There are three parts that you should be aware of:

Your Proof Of University Course Acceptance

This could be a letter of acceptance, either original or an electronic copy will do.

Additionally, you should also attach your language scores such as your

IELTS test results to prove your English proficiency.

Your Proof Of Identify

This is rather straightforward. You will need to upload a copy of the information page of your passport when you apply online.

Your Proof Of Financial Support

In order to prove you can support yourself, there are a number of ways you can do it. These include:

• Proof of a Canadian bank account in your name with bank statements
• Proof of a student loan from a bank
• A bank draft that can be converted to Canadian dollars
• Proof that your tuition fees and housing costs are fully paid for
• Proof of funding from a scholarship program that was awarded to you

Once you have prepared all of the necessary documents, you can apply online for your study permit.

This is the default way to apply unless you have a disability. Once your application is done, you might need to get your biometrics (photo and fingerprint) done.

You are almost there! Your application is submitted and all that is left for you to do is to wait.

The processing time will vary depending on the country you are from and there might be additional information required. This can entail:

• Heading for an interview with Canadian officials in your country
• Undergoing a medical examination
• Requesting more specific information

If your application is approved, you will get a port of entry letter that states you are allowed to study in Canada. You need to bring this letter with you when you arrive in Canada and you will get your actual study permit at the port of entry or mailed to a residence in Canada if you have one.
