Bachelor of Visual Arts - Photography, Sculpture and Moving Image

Our visual arts degree prepares you for the demands of a career in contemporary art, whether as an artist or in the many other roles within the art sector. Study visual arts and enjoy a student-centred and studio-based programme where you can follow your interests in art – including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture or moving-image.

As a graduate of our visual arts programme, you’ll have a sound understanding of the trends and concepts driving contemporary art, the importance of mātauranga Māori, and how to work collaboratively to produce objects, craft, images, taonga and artefacts.

Interested in photography, sculpture or moving image Create a range of artworks using different media, ideas, techniques and technologies. Learn in our wānangastudio environment, and experiment with different methods and techniques, including studio lighting, digital scanning, film processing, darkroomdigital printing, video and still camera technology, sound, editing, moving-image and AI.

You’ll become familiar with photography, sculpture or moving image in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand but also discover global trends in the art world. Throughout your studies you can access AUT’s excellent art and design facilities to help you create your artworks.

Bachelor’s degree entry requirements equivalent to New Zealand Year 13 New Zealand secondary school qualifications Overall Require NCEA level 3 certificate which consists of 80 credits, including at least 60 credits at level 3 or higher. Can include up to 20 credits at level 2. Subject credits Total of 42 level 3 credits including: 14 credits from one approved subject 14 credits from a second approved subject 14 credits from a third approved subject International Baccalaureate (IB) with successful completion of a minimum of 24 points. Cambridge International Examination - a minimum of 120 points on the UCAS Tariff* at A or AS level from any subjects which are broadly equivalent to the subjects in the NCEA approved subject list. Must include at least three subjects (excluding Thinking Skills) with grades D or above. Numeracy: A minimum grade of D in International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) mathematics or any mathematics subject at AS or A level. Literacy: A minimum grade of E in English Language and/or English Literature subject at AS or A level. General Certificate of Education (GCE) with three A-levels including at least one C grade or better. A result in General Studies cannot be included among the 3 on which the application is based. A minimum of CCC scores (7 points) across the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) Acceptance of the NCUK English for Academic Purposes qualification as an alternative to meeting the English-language requirements, with a minimum of a C grade overall and no less than D grade in each component. IELTS (Academic) 6.0 overall with all bands 5.5 or higher; or equivalent. TOEFL iBT - 80
