Healthcare Science - BSc (Hons) Degree

Healthcare Science is a dynamic and continually evolving discipline that requires highly trained individuals to perform an array of laboratory based techniques that contribute to the overall care and wellbeing of patients.The professionally accredited BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science degree at Cardiff Met is specifically designed to enable students to develop, integrate and apply scientific knowledge and skills to the multi-disciplinary investigation of human health and disease. With elements of work-based training incorporated into every year of the programme, it is carefully tailored to prepare graduates for a career in the NHS.​
The Healthcare Science degree is closely linked with the workforce planning requirements for NHS Wales, therefore offering an enhanced level of employability. During the second year of study, students will specialise in one of the following disciplines: Blood Science, Cellular Science, Genetics Scienceor Infection Science. Successful graduates will also be eligible to apply for registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), further enhancing the career opportunities.This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).Healthcare Science is a continually changing, dynamic, professional and scientific discipline concerned with understanding how diseases develop and how they may affect the normal functioning of the body. The aim of the discipline is the investigation of the disease process and, ultimately, the development of methods for monitoring, diagnosing, treating and preventing disease.Healthcare Science offers challenging and rewarding career opportunities within the National Health Service and many other organisations including the Health Protection Agency, National Blood Authority and Medical Research Council.Successful completion of the Healthcare Science programme at Cardiff Metropolitan University will allow graduates to apply for registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).Work based training:extended periods of training in NHS laboratories are embedded across the three years of this degree programme. This ensures that students gain in depth knowledge, understanding and experience of the healthcare science environment in preparation for employment as a Healthcare Science PractitionerBiomedical Scientist within the NHS.
