Bachelor of Arts in English

Great works of imaginative literature, old and new, are at the heart of Crandall's English program. We study novels, poems, and plays because of their power to move us and help us draw closer to goodness, truth, and beauty. As students experience and explore this richness, they develop the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills they will need in their professional careers.

English students can choose from a wide range of exciting courses, including specialized courses on classic authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, and Eliot, as well as survey courses in Canadian literature, American Literature, and contemporary literary criticism. Crandall's English program also offers unique upper-level courses that explore the ways in which a Christian worldview informs and enriches the work of best-selling authors such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Crandall's BA in English is excellent preparation for careers that require expert levels of reading, writing, and research, as well as for those that require strong analytical and communication skills.

Recent graduates from Crandall's B.A. in English have continued their studies at some of Canada's best known graduate schools and have pursued careers in administration, education, Christian ministries, creative writing, journalism, law, public relations, and public service.

International applicants are required to have completed a preparatory program that leads to university entrance in their own country. Generally, an academic language arts course and a minimum of four additional university-preparatory courses are required. A university preparatory math course is required for students applying to the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Business Administration programs. Students applying for our Bachelor of Science will also be required to have a university-preparatory course in Biology and Chemistry.

Secondary school applicants need to have achieved in their final year of schooling an average of 70% (5 best scoring academic subjects).

Applicants who are looking to transfer from another post-secondary institution are required to have an overall GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.3 scale).

CAN-Test: minimum 4.5 overall, minimum 4.0 in each area. (Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees)
CAEL: minimum band 70 overall, minimum 60 in each area. (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment)
CLB: minimum 9 overall, minimum 8 in each area. (Canadian Language Benchmarks)
Duolingo: minimum 115 overall, minimum 95 in each area
Cambridge English Scale: minimum overall score of 176 from C1 Advanced. No less than 169 in any paper.
PTE (Pearson) Academic: minimum score of 56 overall
