Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology - Ethnomusicology

We value the many possibilities and pathways for meaningful work. Our alumni have an excellent placement record in traditional academic positions as well as an array of music-related professions. As part of our program, students participate in an integration of public engagement, scholarship, and music making, while being a part of a national and international network of professional activities.

When entering the program, all students are considered for support in form of research and teaching assistantships and scholarships. Current students then have access to funding for research and conferences as well as a strong record of national and international fellowships and grants. The inseparability of scholarship, music making, and public engagement, as well as a collaborative and innovative research environment, engages our students, faculty, and communities across the globe. Students in our program are able to explore specialized studies programs in early and world music in addition to their primary are of study.

Our program is supported by a world-class collection of resources in the Warren D. Allen Music Library, an extensive collection of early music and world music instruments, FSU Sound and Video Archives, and a World Music Iconography Archive.

In order to meet the Florida State University requirements for graduate admission, applicants must have earned a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average (GPA) in all coursework attempted while registered as an upper-division undergraduate student working towards a bachelor's degree. Applicants not meeting this requirement may be considered for admission, but only by special exception. To determine your upper-division GPA, please consult the GPA calculation worksheet. If your upper-division GPA is below a 3.0, please be sure to address this deficiency in your Statement of Purpose. You are also encouraged to have your referees address your academic preparedness for graduate study in their letters of recommendation.
