Master of Science in Chemistry

The department provides programs in analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemistry, as well as in more specialized areas including polymer and coatings, electrochemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, cancer biology, colloids, corrosion, environmental chemistry, kinetics, organometallic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, atmospheric sciences, solid state chemistry, chemical instrumentation design and development, spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry. A number of our faculty are involved in efforts which have been organized into several centers or institutes including the Missouri S&T Coatings Institute, the Materials Research Center, the Cloud and Aerosol Sciences Laboratory and the Center for Single Nanoparticle, Single Cell, and Single Molecule Monitoring. Financial support is available from research grants for advanced students.

Each entering graduate student will be required to take placement examinations before being allowed to register for the first time in a regular semester. The normal undergraduate preparation expected of students who wish to do graduate work in chemistry is a B.S. degree in Chemistry. This includes two semesters each of general, organic, physical, analytical (including instrumental analysis), and one semester of advanced inorganic.

Transcripts (in English) from all colleges and universities attended. All unofficial copies of transcripts and scores can be uploaded to your online application for S&T to review. Upon arrival on campus, you must request that an official copy of your transcript(s) to be sent to us directly from your previous university's registrar's office and all official scores reported directly from the respective testing agency. Once we receive the official documents, we will verify them. If there are any discrepancies between the unofficial documents you submitted, Missouri S&T will withdraw your admission and you will not be allowed to apply to S&T in the future.

Admission as a regular graduate student is normally limited to those who ranked in the upper third of their baccalaureate graduating class or who have done quality work at the graduate level. For this requirement, a cumulative B average (3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale), or a B average (3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) for the student's last sixty credit hours of undergraduate coursework is considered equivalent to an upper one-third standing.
On the Personal Statement screen, you must submit a statement of 1,000 words or less on why youre interested in the program. This statement may include your educational goals, discussion of personal circumstances, and faculty you wish to work with.
