Pursue a career as a music educator in elementary and secondary schools and become eligible for New York State initial certification as a teacher of music for grades PK12. You'll put theory to practice through supervised teaching internships in NYC schools and community settings, study abroad, and have the option to specialize your studies in vocal music, instrumental music, composing, songwriting, or piano. You'll complete a core curriculum of interdisciplinary courses in the liberal arts as well as intensive study of music, music theory and history, and music pedagogy. Required courses include elementary and secondary teaching methods, music education foundations, and music technology. You can tailor your degree to your interests and career goals through elective courses in areas including the liberal arts, jazz studies, music business, songwriting, screen scoring, music theatre, and performing arts education. You also have the option to specialize your studies in vocal music, instrumental music, songwriting, composition, or piano.
You'll gain valuable experience by completing two semesters of student teaching at New York City public and independent schools, and in community music settings under the close supervision of experienced music teachers and teaching artists.
Youre encouraged to hone your passions in the musical artsfrom vocals to composition to instrumentationby participating in a variety of performing ensembles and chamber groups directed by leading New York artists. You can choose from a variety of options, such as Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, Recording Studio Ensemble, NYU Chorale, Concert Band, and the All-University Jazz Ensemble.
