Master of Science in Engineering Design

The Engineering Design (DESIGN) graduate program prepares the innovators of the future. We integrate the disciplines of engineering with design theory, business, psychology, and art through project-based learning. Through the graduate program, students develop the technical depth and breadth to solve problems related to products, systems, processes, and services. Both degrees provide ample opportunities for students to sharpen their holistic design skills while gaining substantial practical experience in a studio environment. Both offer a chance to explore engineering challenges through multidimensional context-specific lenses, from beginning to endhelping students become master designers.

The School of Engineering Design and Innovation and its programs accept online applications only. GRE scores are not required. Applicants do not need to submit GRE scores to be considered for admission, financial aid, or merit-based scholarships. All programs are STEM OPT eligible.
Three letters of recommendation
Applicants must enter the contact information for three recommendation references.
The references will then be electronically notified by the Graduate School regarding how to submit/upload their individual reference evaluation form and reference letter to the applicant's application.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores (applies to international applicants only)
All international applicants must take and officially submit scores for the TOEFL or the IELTS.
A minimum overall score of 80 on the TOEFL is required, with a minimum score of 19 on the speaking section.
A minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required.
Exception: International applicants who have received a baccalaureate or a graduate degree in certain countries are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement. For more information, view exemptions from English proficiency testing.
Penn State's institution code is 2660. A department code is not required.
Transcripts
Copies of transcripts, degree/study certificates, and diplomas in the language of instruction from all institutions attended, both undergraduate and graduate should be uploaded
Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement
The personal statement is an open-ended essay that can include but is not limited to your goals, interests, unique experiences, and skills. This also gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your written communication skills. This statement should not exceed one page.
Design Portfolio
A concise design portfolio demonstrating your best work should be prepared and submitted to the online application system as a PDF. Since program participants will come from many disciplines, the content of the portfolios is expected to vary considerably across candidates. For example, everything from blueprints to algorithms, CAD models to prototypes may be appropriate. Each exhibit should have a short accompanying description providing background on the work. The PDF should not exceed six pages.
International applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisaaional admission, enrollment, and, if necessary, remedial course work.
