Certificate of Completion in Criminal Justice Advocacy

The Criminal Justice Advocacy Certificate (CJAC) is a 15-credit certificate program designed for students working within or planning to work within the criminal justice system. This Certificate is of particular relevance for students that are interested in social work or other related professions such as case managers, psychotherapists, school counselors, community outreach personnel, community correctional officers, community organizers, and those working in the fields of nursing, public health, legal studies and psychology. It focuses on the intersection of law and psychology.Students who successfully complete this program - by achieving a grade of 2.0 or better for each individual course - will:Identify the historical trends in U.S. criminal justice policies including practices related to multicultural and social justice issues.
Evaluate best practices and contemporary models of jail and hospital diversion programs for individuals experiencing crises.
Explain the civil laws involved in involuntary treatment and how they impact the effort to protect vulnerable adults.
Recognize the potential complications that arise from adverse childhood events.
Demonstrate how to work effectively with individuals from a range of relevant professions and from a multicultural perspective.
Describe theories to bridge gaps between the ideas of justice and the requirements of the criminal justice system.
Incorporate strategies that criminal justice professionals need to resolve ethical dilemmas, and understand the dilemmas faced by others within the justice system.
