Doctor of Philosophy in Business

The Faculty of Business offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Business Administration, Master of Financial Management, Master of Accounting, and Doctor of Philosophy. In addition to the standard MBA program, specializations are available in International Business, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment, Finance, Public Policy and Management, and Sustainability. PhD specializations are Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Operations & Information Systems, and Strategic Management & Organization.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Business program at the University of Alberta offers specializations in Accounting, Finance, Operations and Information Systems, Marketing, and Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Management including macro and micro organizational behaviour. At any given time, there are between 50-70 students, with an entering class of 10-15 per year, which allows students to foster close dynamic bonds with their classmates and mentors. As of the 202223 academic year, the program has secured fifth-year funding for our PhD candidates.

Letters of reference:
The applicant must have three letters of reference evaluating an applicant's capability for original research.

Statement of purpose:
In two to three pages, applicants should identify what specific topics within the specialization they are currently interested in and why. They should also describe their relevant skills and past experiences, tentative plans upon completion of the program, and any additional information that is felt would be useful. The statement of purpose helps us identify a suitable supervisor, but is non-binding in that it need not eventually form the basis of the applicant's research.

The applicant should include education and work history, as well as publications and conference presentations in this document.

TOEFL iBT, in-person or special at-home edition - Total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent. IELTS - 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest.
