The major is a flexible, interdisciplinary program offering opportunities for both wide, comparative study of South and Southeast Asian cultures, literature, religion, and history. The department teaches the following 13 languages: Bengali, Burmese, Filipino, Hindi, Indonesian, Khmer, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese.South and Southeast Asian Studies is the study of the civilizations of South and Southeast Asia. South and Southeast Asian Studies encompasses the study of major languages including Bengali, Sanskrit, Tagalog, and Vietnamese as well as the specialized training in areas of literature, philosophy and religion.
South and Southeast Asian Studies majors at Berkeley have the option to train in fourteen languages. The Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies houses faculty members specializing in all fields of literature, history, and religious studies and in all periods from classical to modern. Faculty members conduct research in countries such as Burma, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Tibet, and Vietnam. The undergraduate South and Southeast Asian Studies degree program is offered through the College of Letters Science.
