Biology is the study of life as it has evolved and is evolving on earth. All aspects of life are examined, from molecular processes inside cells, to large scale ecological interactions between organisms in their environment, and how the changing environment shapes these interactions. Specializations: Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology, Environmental and Integrative Physiology, Evolution and Biodiversity, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Integrative Biology. The Department of Biological Sciences includes core courses in general biology, the diversity of fungi, algae, animals and plants, genetics, cell biology, physiology, ecology and evolution. We also offers courses in a wide variety of areas including invertebrate and vertebrate structure, animal and plant ecology and physiology, boreal ecology, molecular biology, mycology, entomology, developmental biology, limnology, ichthyology, ornithology, animal behaviour and mammalogy. Biological Sciences courses include lectures and laboratory study and sometimes involve field trips. Over 80 courses are available to undergraduate students. Our students also have the opportunity to take biology related course from outside the department in areas such as microbiology, biochemistry, agriculture, environmental science and human genetics, in fact, anywhere on campus.
