Graduate Certificate in Graphic Design

The Graduate Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems is open to students from departments in all colleges at the University of Memphis and colleges in the Mid South. The program is intended for students currently admitted to a graduate program at the U of M or another university or students holding an undergraduate degree.

The Department Art and Design provides a diverse array of degree programs catering to students' interests and career goals. Undergraduate options include the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), while postgraduate pursuits encompass the Master of Arts (M.A.), the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), and the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degrees.

At the undergraduate level, students pursuing a B.A. can specialize in various concentrations such as Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, Global Art Histories, or Visual Arts. Meanwhile, those opting for a B.F.A. have the choice of Art Education, Graphic Design, Photography, or Studio Arts concentrations.

For graduate studies, the department offers an M.A. program with a focus on Art History, providing specializations in concentrations including African American - African Diaspora Art Histories, African American and African Diaspora Art Histories with a Museum Studies Certificate, Egyptian Art and Archaeology, General Art History, or Museum Practices. Likewise, the M.F.A. program offers concentrations in Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking and Photography, or Sculpture.

Admission to the Graduate School is open to anyone holding a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university. In cases, where a program’s accrediting body allows alternate admissions standards, exceptions may be made. Applicants should have completed undergraduate or graduate work of sufficient quality and scope to enable them to successfully pursue graduate study. Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor’s degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents. GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field. English proficiency test scores required by the University: Duolingo English Test- For students affected by test center closures due to COVID-19, the University is temporarily accepting Duolingo as an alternative. 100 or higher on the overall score, all sub scores must be at least 80. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Institution code 1459. TOEFL - 550 or higher on the paper version, 79 or higher on the internet-based test IELTS (International English Language Testing System- 6.0 or higher PTE (Pearson Test of English) - 53 or higher Students currently admitted to a graduate program at the U of M or other university or students already holding an undergraduate degree may apply for admission to the Graduate Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems. Students who have completed an undergraduate degree program but who have neither completed a graduate degree nor been admitted to a graduate program can apply to the Graduate School for admission as Non-Degree Seeking students. Students must apply to both the certificate program and the graduate school. To apply, students submit: transcript of undergraduate degree program and transcripts of prior and current graduate study; two letters of recommendation; a letter describing reasons why the student is interested in pursuing a graduate certificate in the area of geographic information systems and how the program corresponds with prior experience and anticipated career plans.
