The combination of English and History uniquely positions you to be able to interrogate a variety of literary texts (including film, theatre, poetry and prose) and place them within their historical, social and political contexts. Both departments offer modules that explore literary and historical cultures from the medieval period up until the contemporary moment. This course is available with either an English Literature or an English Language pathway.
To understand how English literature and language have changed, developed and influenced cultures, you need to understand the historical context. What's more, literary texts can provide important insights into life in earlier periods of history. Evidently, the combination of English and history is a natural one.
Splitting your time between English and history, youll have the opportunity to pursue either an English literature or an English language pathway - or even take modules from both areas, studying a range of genres from literary fiction, journalism, theatre, film, everyday conversation, adverts, digital writing, to poetry and creative writing.
In history, youll have the opportunity to study past societies from 1000 BCE to the 21st century, choosing from a variety of global topics that interest you.
