Learn the tenets of strong writing structure, discipline and creative thinking with award-winning faculty. Work with fellow students in collaborative class settings or join the student-led Undergraduate Creative Writing Society. One of the few Creative Writing programs in the nation to be its own academic department, The Department of Creative Writing at UTEP is dedicated to the intellectual and personal growth of its students, and to the idea of creating a community of writers and thinkers who will serve the people and concerns of the border region for generations to come. Each student entering our program as a major or minor will certainly learn the fundamentals of many genres of writing, including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting, but with our focus on discipline, structure, and creative thinking, and on the ways imaginative writing responds to and impacts the world in which we live, students who complete our programs will be well situated to enter any career path they can imagine. While some of our students do go on to continue their study of Creative Writing at the graduate level in MFA or PhD programs, and while others go on to a career focused on writing, many others have gone on to become teachers, lawyers, counselors/therapists, medical students, and to careers in the media. Film, TV, public relations, the video gaming industry, advertising, journalism, law, science, graphic design, medicine: Everyone is looking for graduates who can synthesize information and tell effective stories to help readers make sense of the world in which we live.
