UTSA's Commercial and Digital Music program was designed to combine music skills and performance with cutting-edge technology and entrepreneurship, extending beyond traditional music pathways and helping students stand out in the music industry. Students will gain hands-on learning experience and develop skills in music production and technology, songwriting and composition, film and video game scoring, TV and media composition, music management, and more.
This program was created to embrace the evolution of modern musicians and welcomes students with varying musical experience, from traditional instruments to the digital audio workstation (DAW). For the audition process, students can either perform on their principal instrument/voice or submit a portfolio showcasing their creative work as audio engineers, composers, DJs, sonic artists, and more.

This Focus Area helps prepare students for work as solo and ensemble performers. Technical and expressive elements are explored in one-to-one, small group, and larger ensemble settings. Performance experiences on campus and within the broader community are embedded within each course. Within the new Contemporary Studio Ensemble, students will have opportunities to perform various contemporary styles and genres (including pop, folk, ethnic, and electronic/digital music) in both live performances and studio recording sessions.
