Master of Arts in History - East Asian History

Our East Asian History faculty offer rigorous comparative and interdisciplinary training in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and transnational Asian history. While our research interests intersect in significant areas, we represent, collectively, a wide range of methodological approaches and areas of interest. Our faculty and students also participate in a vibrant scholarly community at UW-Madison that encompasses the Center for East Asian Studies, the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and the East Asia Graduate Student Association.

Our faculty's special strengths include the social, cultural, political, and political-economic history of pre-modern, modern, and global China, gender in modern China, Chinese environmental history and the Chinese borderlands, the cultural and social history of post-colonial Korea, the social, cultural, political history of early modern Japan and modern Japan, and transnational Asia, including intellectual history, migration, and diaspora.

A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution is required.
A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work) or a master's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required. Applicants from an international institution must demonstrate strong academic achievement comparable to a 3.00 for an undergraduate or master's degree.
