Master of Arts in English

English studies today offers a wider range of classes, topics, and projects than ever before. You can still explore the classic works of literature and the great authors, to be sure. But now our curriculum also includes film studies and media, rhetoric and professional writing, the digital humanities, critical and cultural theory, and creative writing workshops. Students can focus their studies in these areas and work with our advisors to plan a curriculum that meets their personal and career goals best. The MA degree at UWM involves course work, a master's project and an oral exam. All degree requirements must be completed within five years of initial enrollment. The project must be completed and the exam taken within one year after completing 30 credits.

An applicant must meet Graduate School requirements plus these departmental requirements to be considered for admission to the program: Undergraduate major in English or related field, with appropriate background for proposed concentration of study: Plan A, broad background in English and American literature, Plan B, literature, linguistics, and/or composition, Plan C, literature and creative writing, Plan G, professional writing, Plan H, background in media studies, film studies, or digital and/or popular culture. Undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). Submission of scores on the Graduate Record Examination General Test. Three letters of recommendation to the Department's Director of Graduate Studies from persons familiar with applicant's academic ability and achievement. A sample of academic writing. For Plan C admission, an applicant must also submit samples of original fiction or poetry. You must have attended this institution for at least one year and the degree was earned at an institution in the United States, and you have lived and worked continuously in the U.S since earning the degree. Cambridge English: Advanced / Cambridge English Proficiency C1 level or higher. TOEFL IBT (not Home Edition) - 79 120, IELTS - 6.5 9.0.
