3. Some tips to help you score well in the IELTS Speaking test

  • Read the question carefully, identify the main requirement: Focus on the question, avoid listening vaguely and missing keywords. Because this is the main factor that helps you determine the requirement of the question, thereby giving focused and relevant answers.

  • Do not answer too short or too long: If you give too short answers, there is no way the examiner can know how good you are. Therefore, you should try to expand your answers with explanations and examples. Meanwhile, for long answers, many people often think the longer the better. However, this only applies to candidates with good speaking skills; for those whose English is not very good or lack confidence, speaking long can sometimes lead to mistakes.

  • Use a variety of sentences, extended vocabulary: Flexibly combine many types of simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences,... At the same time, using advanced vocabulary, synonyms,... will also help your test be rated higher!

  • Emphasize when speaking to create attraction: Many candidates often only focus on grammar and forget that intonation is also an important part that helps your test score. When presenting, you should combine emphasis, change of tone,... this way will create more attraction and interest for the listener!

  • Do not memorize, speak naturally: Memorizing is a strategy many candidates use to save time and avoid thinking during the test. However, the pressure and anxiety in the exam room will make you forget what you have learned, making your speech hesitant, unnatural, and the examiner will easily notice that!

  • Do not speak too fast, stay calm, answer confidently: The more anxious and uncomfortable you are, the harder it will be for you to speak fluently and connect the parts of the test. Learn to control your mood, don't worry too much if you accidentally answer a point incorrectly! Instead, stay calm and confident to complete the next parts well!
