Mechatronics: What school to study? Career opportunities

Topics covered

The development of Industry 4.0 has promoted outstanding developments in the global economy in general, and the industrial sectors in Vietnam in particular. In addition, the mechatronics industry is considered an important field that plays a role as a launching pad for a country to catch up with this pace of development.

If you have an endless passion for modern mechanical equipment, designed with smart and automatic features, you can pursue Mechatronics - one of the fields that attracts a lot of interest from international students today. This article will help you understand in detail what mechatronics is, job openings, and estimated future salaries.

1. What is Mechatronics?

Mechatronics Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering is a field that intersects electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science that focuses on the process of researching, designing, and manufacturing intelligent machines that can interact with humans.

Mechatronics technology is used in many popular fields such as entertainment, military, education, industry, and agriculture. Typical applications that take advantage of this technology can be mentioned such as: industrial robots, self-driving cars, smart homes, smart medical devices, etc.

2. What does Mechatronics study?

It is easy to see from the name, the Mechatronics major will teach you knowledge around the aspects of "mechanism" and "electronics". When studying this major, you will be equipped with knowledge of:

  • Microcomputer Integrated Manufacturing

  • Manufacturing and Automation in the Factory

  • Physical and Chemical Properties of Industrial Materials

  • Mechanical design mechanisms and kinematics

  • Mechatronic control system and programmable logic controller.

  • Industrial control principles, including tools, circuits, components, and control techniques.

Throughout the course, students will be taught methods that combine "electrical" and "mechanical" to produce new inventions or improve existing designs. You will be able to practice and practice your knowledge through internships, practical projects in industrial parks, businesses or governments. In addition, you are also equipped with soft skills such as:

  • System Design and Analysis Skills

  • Adaptive and learning skills

  • Programming and software skills

  • Understanding Sensors and Control Systems

  • Updating new technology knowledge

3. Where should I study Mechatronics?

To pursue and graduate in Mechatronics, it will take you about 3-4 years for the Undergraduate level, and 2 years for the Postgraduate (Master's) programs. In Vietnam, you can study Mechatronics programs at the following schools: Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh University of Science and Technology, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, Saigon University of Technology, etc.

If you want to study and gain practical experience at schools in developing countries, you can refer to the courses listed in each country below:

4. What does a graduate of Mechatronics do?

The field of Mechatronics is predicted to grow quite strongly, accompanied by open job opportunities in the near future. Typically, in the US, this major is identified as a potential field with open job opportunities. When graduating from Mechatronics Technology, you will easily find jobs in many attractive positions such as:

  • Engineer who designs/troubleshoots control systems for hardware, software that controls machinery, automated equipment, and automated manufacturing systems

  • Advisors, lecturers or technology transfer researchers in the field of mechatronics technology

  • M&E technicians, control rooms, and technology departments automatically control automatic production lines in factories

  • Electronic Design Engineer

  • Data Scientist/Big Data Analyst

  • Technical management and supervision at enterprises

Graduating from Mechatronics, you can find jobs in large corporations such as Samsung, HP, LG Electronics, Siemens.. These tasks can revolve around the development process of automation of component and machinery production lines. At the same time, you can try yourself in large corporations in the garment field such as Uniqlo, the position of operating sorting and packaging robots.

5. What is the salary of mechatronics?

Based on the characteristics of the industry, the requirements for knowledge, experience as well as the nature of the work are quite complicated, and the remuneration regime of these job positions is also quite higher than other professions. The salary of the mechatronics major will vary depending on the degree, work experience, position held as well as the working location.

  • When you graduate and work in a basic position, with no experience, you can receive a salary of 7-9 million/month. With more than a year of experience, the salary can be up to 14-20 million monthly.

  • Automation engineers also receive high remuneration compared to the general ground. An engineer who takes on the role of operating and maintaining machinery has a salary in the range of 8-15 million VND/month. Electronics engineer is also a position that you can consider. Graduates of mechatronics in this field can receive 7-8 million VND/month.
